Embracing the Journey to Success

by Erin Rainwater

"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." – Albert Schweitzer

The Journey vs. The Destination

Every successful person you admire has their own unique story, marked by failures, roadblocks, and moments of doubt. It’s a universal truth that "the journey is more important than the destination," yet this wisdom can be challenging to embrace, especially during the inevitable "waiting stages" filled with uncertainty.

When you've poured your heart and soul into something, even minor setbacks can feel devastating. However, it's crucial to recognize that these obstacles are not the end of your journey but rather essential components of it.

Understanding and appreciating the journey's importance provides the foundation for personal growth and long-lasting success.

Defining Your Own Success

Success has different meanings for everyone. For some, it’s about achieving financial freedom; for others, it’s about meeting specific personal or professional goals. Denzel Washington once said, “For me, success is inner peace. That’s a good day for me.”

If you’re unsure what success means to you, take a moment to reflect on who comes to mind when you think of a successful person. What have they achieved that you admire? Is that the kind of success you aspire to? It’s important to define what success means to you and to know what you are working towards.

The Power of Relationships

Once you’ve defined your version of success, the next step is to take deliberate actions toward it. The journey can be long and challenging, often punctuated by "waiting seasons" and what feels like endless hurdles. However, these times are invaluable for personal growth.

Consider J.K. Rowling’s journey from a struggling single mother to one of the best-selling authors of all time. Her path was far from easy, filled with rejections and challenges. Yet, these obstacles only fueled her determination.

She famously wrote her first book in a café while caring for her young daughter. Rowling once reflected, “Failure meant a stripping away of the inessential,” which allowed her to focus fully on her writing.

Her perseverance despite rejection from 12 publishers is a powerful lesson in resilience and the importance of the journey itself. Not only will you find wisdom during your journey, but you’ll also build your strongest relationships. Collaborating with like-minded individuals can create a support network that propels you toward your goals.

Bill Gates and Paul Allen met at Lakeside School in Seattle, and their collaboration eventually led to the founding of Microsoft, transforming their lives and the world. Building such relationships can provide both emotional support and accountability, essential elements for anyone striving for success.

Learning from Setbacks

Your journey will also be marked by learning from setbacks. Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks, had many great ideas to grow Starbucks when he started in 1982, but his most notable proposal came after a trip to Milan in 1983. He fell in love with the Italian café culture, where cafés were places for leisure and social gatherings.

Schultz proposed this concept to Starbucks' founders, but they were not interested. Believing strongly in his vision, Schultz left Starbucks to start his own coffeehouse, Il Giornale. His venture quickly flourished, attracting nearly 300 customers on its first day. Meanwhile, Starbucks struggled and began closing stores.

Seizing the opportunity, Schultz returned to purchase Starbucks and transformed it into the global brand we know today. Schultz could never have anticipated that leaving the company he loved would be a setup for something much greater.

What we often perceive as setbacks can actually be setups for breakthroughs and achievements beyond our imagination.

Trusting the journey and embracing the lessons along the way can lead to greater successes than we initially envisioned.

Your Unique Journey to Success

As you reflect on your path, it becomes evident that every challenge, setback, and lesson has been a crucial stepping stone toward your ultimate success. The journey equips you with invaluable skills, knowledge, and relationships that enrich your life far beyond any single achievement. Success is not merely reaching a destination; it is about the growth, resilience, and wisdom you gain along the way.

Embrace your journey with confidence and curiosity, knowing that each step, no matter how difficult, brings you closer to your unique definition of success.

Remember, the journey itself is what makes the destination truly meaningful and rewarding.
